REAL CABINET PORTUGUESE READING - 178 YEARS
Today, May 14, 2015, the Royal Portuguese Reading Room is completing 178 years of existence.
It is the oldest association established by the Portuguese in Brazil after independence 1822.
Its headquarters, built in Neo-Manueline, which was inaugurated by Princess Isabel in 1887, holds about 350,000 volumes (thousands of rare books). This wonderful collection is available to any of the people, for the Royal Office is a public library.
Real Office functions as a study center and a center of literary research, directed and frequented by university professors.
Among the rare works of the Royal Office figure of an editing copy princeps of "Os Lusíadas" by 1572. It also has in its collection the manuscript Doomed Love, work of the writer Camilo Castelo Branco Portuguese.
The library is open to the public on working days and to be associated with the institution registrations can be made daily in the Secretariat, at Rua Luis de Camoes, No. 30 - Centro - Rio de Janeiro
