Nothing saves a few dollars like experience! Here is what we spent in Istanbul Turkey.
I feel like our experience is starting to pay off. We are about 6 months into our trip and we have some great ways to save a few dollars here and there. It has taken a few mishaps, some education and a lot of luck to get our dollars to go further. An example of a mishap would be buying a tour without looking at other options because we were excited and tired at the same time. In Egypt, we could have probably saved more than a few dollars by shopping around or doing some of the scheduling ourselves. The city is chaotic, overwhelming and different than anything we had ever experienced so we were easily influenced by our Hotel/Tour company. We learned a lot on that trip. An example of education is, we have learned to check Trip Advisor before we enter a country and look for current scams. We ask often for advice like is Uber currently working there and can they pick up at the airport. Their forum is a great place to get free advice and see what others asking. Now for the luck, we are both extremely lucky that we are not foodies. We have saved a lot of money because neither of us focus on food. We are both easy going and can eat top ramen to save a few bucks or dine out at restaurants that are $ and $$ rather than $$$ or $$$$ restaurants. Our best most memorable meals have been picnics with grocery store food on the side of a canal or a fresh fish burrito from a random guy on the side of a sidewalk. We are lucky because we are both easy going and willing to take a chance.
