Hi.

We are Bud and Beth. We sold most of our belongings (stored the rest) and hit the road for one year around the world. Follow our adventure as we go to 26 countries and 45 cities (give or take a few) in one year.

What we did for our 4 days in Vienna.

Here are some of the things we saw in Vienna

St Stephens Cathedral – originally build in 1147 (completed 1160). The current building is actually from 1339-1365 because of fires that had destroyed the original building. There has been many additions and even damage from WWII. It’s a beautiful old church and is one of the largest in Europe.

Kunsthistorisches Museum – This is by far one of the best museums I have seen. The building itself is stunning and then add the art work and it is just amazing. The building was built to house the massive art work of the Habsburgs collection. The interior is lavishly decorated with art, sculptures, marble and ornamentations. There is an extremely nice Egyptian collection that we enjoyed very much. The picture gallery was our favorite. Many of the works were displayed in a way that we had not seen before. Major art works of all sizes displayed floor to ceiling in room after room.

We enjoyed the Shonnburg Palace, the summer home for the last set of Hapsburg rulers. It’s a pleasant stroll through the 1440 rooms of a 600 years plus dynasty.

The Naschmarkt across the street from our Wombats hostel provided us with a steady diet of good eats and fun stalls to tour. Our walking tour of the old town area gave us a good reference for our 4 days of enjoying Vienna.

My overall impression of Vienna is that it is a city filled with history and is very liberal. We learned that the drinking age of beer and wine is 16. To indulge in harder liquor, you must be 18. We also learned that you can buy alcohol drinks in all types of places and it doesn’t seem to be heavily regulated. We even ran into a young lady who had a refrigerated push cart handing out free cans of beer for promotional reasons. We saw cigarette machines on street corners where anyone could purchase them. The legal smoking age is 16.

We had a quick stay in Vienna with only 4 days to spend sightseeing. One of those 4 days was spent lounging around avoiding the rain and wind. We spent the afternoon in the hostel main room, nuzzled in a window bay watching people walk by and getting caught up on planning some of our future stops. Bud was fighting a cold and I was eager for some down time.  We did get to see some wonderful places in Vienna. Beth & Bud
