JOHANNSBURG SOUTH AFRICA
Johannesburg is a city that is diverse in its population - like much of South Africa. The city is one of the largest in the world that is not sitting by a river or water source. The reason the city grew up in such a unwelcoming location is because of the gold that was found in 1886.
Currently the 25%-37% (depending on who you listen to) unemployment rate has many people living in horrible poverty situations. All homes have bars on the windows and doors. The streets are littered with trash and trash dumps are a common sight. While walking downtown so many large businesses were closed up and in severe dis-repair with some even missing their roofs. Broken windows are every where. Local businesses use metal garage doors to close up every night. At night there are no store fronts with dark unlit streets. In some neighborhoods the store is completely enclosed except a door with a barred window. The clerk inside retrieves your item and passes it through the small opening after receiving the cash.
After the tiny glimpse i got into city involvement (at home) - I wouldn't even know where to begin here. Only 64% of Jo-berg area residents have water into their homes. The government is providing free education to children but the education is poor and many students do not attend.
This location was so eye opening to the complex issues this beautiful country faces.
