HOW MUCH WE SPENT IN JOHANNESBURG SOUTH AFRICA
In Johannesburg everything is pretty inexpensive. Right now the the American Dollar to African Rand is 1 to 15. This trip should have cost us much less but I had accidentally left behind a 1 year supply of a medication that Elise had to send to me via Fed Ex. Having something sent from the US to South Africa is extremely expensive and there is no real guarantee you will actually receive it. We had actually tried to get it sent to us in Brazil but in Brazil you have to have a number (like a social security number) and if you don't you have to apply for a temporary one. Our airbnb host warned us of the frustration of Brazilian mail. So we had it sent to our Johannesburg airbnb hosts work office. It cost $106 to mail and then once it got to Johannesburg we had to go pick it up the main Fedex office out by the airport to pay another $65 in South African taxes before they would release it. Luckily I called about it - because they never reached out and notified me that there were taxes due. We had to take a Uber out to get it - which cost ever more money. This mishap made a inexpensive destination, come across much more expensive.
