We have been rushing around so much that I found some lost photos from Capetown South Africa. We had such a amazing time there because it is so rich with history. The country is still in such a transition from apartheid. Apartheid is still such a strong forefront in the minds of the everyday person. The distribution of wealth is very unequal and there are many hard feelings that still have not been healed. Our guides told of stories that seemed as if they happened more recently than over 20 years ago. One area we went to was called District 6. In District 6 over 60,000 people lost their homes and were forcibly removed and then their long time homes and businesses bulldozed down in order to make room for a whites only area. The last residents were evicted in the early 1980's. The claim the government made was the area was crime ridden and un-fit for in-habitation. Residents were relocated to the outer parts of town which made it extremely hard to hold jobs, by goods and services. Family's were split up because of the shade of their skin. All this takes time to heal. High unemployment (25% or more) and government corruption and un-kept promises seem to be the norm.
We enjoyed our trip even tho we we felt uncomfortable that so many people were still struggling. We felt safe and we walked around freely. There are many great museums and stories to be heard. The dollar is very strong so it made for a affordable destination.
