FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF AMSTERDAM
Amsterdam is fairytale magical! We arrived the other day and I cannot get over how beautiful this city is. Canals winding all over, bicycles paths everywhere, ferry boats, history and an alternative edge. This is my kinWe have been riding bikes 12 miles a day (round trip) from our Airbnb to city center. The bike paths are the best I have ever seen. They are marked and paved, both cars and bikes share the road easily. The bike paths are so numerous that you see joggers, bicyclists, scooters, people with disability scooters and even these ultra-tiny cars that all share these special bike paths. The other odd thing is that rarely do you see a helmet, I hope to learn why that is. The whole area seems to be built with the bicyclist in mind. On a beautiful sunny day like we had today – the bicycle seems to be the transportation of choice. I thought Portland was a bike city, and we are, but Amsterdam seems to have a jump on us.
We were able to ride around the city center on a boat so I was able to get some photos of the canals and the house boats. We also got shots of some of the local historic buildings and buildings that are slightly crooked due to the settling of the timber they are built upon. We will be taking a walking tour soon and I can’t wait to learn more of Amsterdam and its unique water way city. Here are some photo’s we have so far. Beth
