Great news! You can afford to visit Venice.
Venice was fabulous. It was beautiful, fun, intriguing, unique and tops the list of my must visit again places. We had been warned several times of the high prices in Venice. Prices are high but we are here to tell you that they don’t have to be budget busting high.
While Bud and I were in line to climb to the top of Santa Maria Del Fiore tower we began a conversation with a young couple from New York. The couple were in town for 5 days and had spent $500 in the first 4 days on food alone. What that wonderful young couple was doing is so different then what we are doing. If we were on a short vacation, we would also be splurging and indulging in much nicer dining experiences. However, we are doing our trip for 1 year and if we were to spend $100 a day on food, we would spend $36,500 on food alone. We have been able to do this trip so inexpensively because we are eating more conservative then we even eat at home. We fix our own meals at least 70% of the time. We take a picnic with us when we will be gone all day. When we do choose to eat out we always check the menu before entering a restaurant. My personal belief is that I would rather see a new city then enjoy top notch food. Luckily, I have found a partner who is willing to do the same. I just did the calculation and for 157 days on the road we have spent $1677 on food. That works out to $34 per day spent for two people living on the road traveling the world.
Now back to my original thought, we were warned about Venice and we listened. We prepared and I feel we conquered. We were able to spend 7 days in Venice Italy for only $1,010. I will always remember the great afternoon sitting on a canal drinking box wine and watching the boats go by. I will remember that day forever. I do not feel like we are cheating ourselves by notching down our eating experiences. For our trip we have chosen to eat on a budget and see more. Now, we are off to Florence! Bet
