THE BEST AIRBNB SO FAR IS IN JOHANNESBURG SOUTH AFRICA
The South Africa Rand is not as strong as the US dollar. This allowed us to stay in a nicer place for less money. In Johannesburg we choose a small cottage off the back of a house of 2 men.
The man who I made arrangements with through Airbnb is named Grant and he is a University Music History teacher. Grants partner Angus owns a local software company. We were able to go out to dinner with them to a local restaurant. I have learned that it is so much more efficient to spend some time with a local to get the feel for the country. They took time to explain to us what it was like when apartheid started to crumble. They are both white men so it was interesting to hear how they learned of the violence.
As for their cottage - it was impeccable. It was so well thought out for guests to have a comfortable stay. They even stocked the fridge with milk, juice, bread, butter, jam, fresh fruit and bottles of beer. The cottage was built in the 1920s but they had renovated it - so everything is real modern. They went so far as to have a heated floor and heated towel rack. For the 4 nights we spent there we only spent $33 a night. We really wish we could have stayed there longer.
