OUR VISIT TO AMMAN JORDAN
We were in Amman for 4 days. We came to see 3 main places; Petra, Jerash and the Citadel. The distance and time did not allow us to visit the Dead Sea - which looked remarkable. We were shocked that the dollar was not as strong, so the expenses added up quickly.
We found the city to be much cleaner than the cities we saw in Egypt. The people were friendly and finding people who speak English was no problem. Even on the drive out of town to Petra we did not see the shacks of poverty. The rural towns were more modest but appeared to be better off then in South Africa and Egypt.
The country is run by a Monarchy and the few people we spoke to seemed happy with the situation. The current Monarchy, King Abdullah's family, has run the country for over 100 years. Our driver gave us an education on his work in the refugee camp. Jordan currently has 1.5 million refugees and a population of just under 10 million Jordanians. He felt Jordan has done a good job helping their misplaced Syrian neighbors. He did not seem bitter or discouraged about the refugees but more proud of helping.
We felt safe and security seemed to be around often but not intimidating. We enjoyed our stay and felt welcomed in their country. Beth
