The Hassan Mosque II is quite a sight to see. It is the 13th largest in the world with the tallest minaret in the world at 689ft. It was completed in 1993 and even has a retractable roof. Only people of the Muslim faith are allowed to enter. I can only imagine how beautiful it is inside with handcrafted marble walls. The mosque itself will hold 25,000 worshipers and the court yard will hold another 80,000.
Just a short distance away is the walled waterfront of Casablanca and the Atlantic ocean. The waterfront area consists of a unattractive thick cement wall and a dirt floor. Trash is a common sight. The are a few beach areas that kids can enjoy but it is very rocky and heavily littered with trash.
The area is secure with roads blocked near the mosque and patrolled by the military type police. The tourist, locals and men fishing all seemed relaxed and happy to be there. We even met some local men who were super excited to get thier pictures taken with us the only Americans there. We have seen no other Americans and not even any Europeans. Beth
